Root Canals

Whenever possible, the practice philosophy of Lee Palmer, DDS, is to prevent tooth loss. Performing a root canal can save a seriously damaged tooth.

What is a root canal?

A root canal is a dental procedure that treats for damage or infection that has spread to the soft interior structure of a tooth, then replaces the exterior of the tooth. The interior of a tooth is referred to as the “pulp”. It includes the soft tissue, blood vessels and the dental nerve, while also safeguarding the root of the tooth.

When is a root canal necessary?

A root canal is the recommended method of treatment whenever an infection in a tooth spreads into the pulp. The most common causes of this type of infection include a tooth that is cracked or chipped due to an injury, or damage from tooth decay, such as a deep cavity.

Without proper treatment, this infection could spread to the end of the tooth root, creating an abscess. This can have dire consequences if the infected pus from the abscess leeches into your bloodstream, potentially leading to organ failure and other life-threatening problems.

What to expect from a root canal in Franklin

Forget what you think you might know about a root canal. Although this is still a complicated procedure, advances in dental technology have made this procedure more convenient and comfortable than it ever has been.

This process usually entails two appointments. First, Dr. Palmer removes any damaged or infected area of the interior of the tooth. This often involves drilling into the canals of the tooth roots–hence the name of the procedure. The interior of the tooth is cleaned out and filled. A temporary filling is placed on the tooth. If an infection is present, your dentist may prescribe an antibiotic.

You will return for a second appointment to receive a crown that replaces the exterior of the damaged tooth. Dr. Palmer can match the crown to the shape and color of your other natural teeth, allowing it to blend seamlessly with your smile.

Why is a root canal important?

If you receive a treatment plan that includes a root canal, following up is crucial. Eventually, the affected tooth will be lost, and that could be just one of the possible ramifications. In addition to a possible abscess, any infection that is present may spread into the supporting jawbone, threatening you with bone loss and potentially jeopardizing the safety of the adjacent teeth.
